I’d like to thank everyone who came out to our “Fun Fest” on February 7th. We had a great time, the weather was perfect, ALL of the wonderful Class Baskets sold. Also, thank you to our wonderful, energetic “Fun Fest” Committee for making it happen! Please check out the home page of our website to see the local sponsors who supported our “Fun Fest”. All in all, we were able to raise over $7,000 for our school! We appreciate your feedback on how the Plumb PTA can make the “Fun Fest” better, and we surely would love more help putting it on next year!
Years ago, a Plumb Parent looked around the campus and thought it looked a little shabby. Her motto was “Don’t complain, get busy.” Her expertise was in Gardening, so she started coordinating “Green Day” several times a year to spruce up the landscaping around campus. That parent’s children have since moved on, and after some time our own 5th Grade teacher and Plumb parent, Mrs. Hull, saw a need to continue maintaining the Butterfly Garden (located outside the Media Center). With the help of Master Gardener Lisa Boing (who was that parent that started Green Day) and her daughters’ Girl Scout Troop, they have been beautifying the Butterfly Garden. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. It looks amazing!!
The reason I told you that story is because I wanted to point out that the Plumb PTA is not necessarily stuck on doing the same things that we have always done in the past (you can see that by the success of our February “Fun Fest”!). Personally, gardening is not my thing. Sure, I like pretty plants as much as the next person, but I tend to plant a few things, put down some mulch, and then I’m done for the year. So when someone else who likes to garden and who is good at it can take on the project of prettying up the campus, the PTA is all for it!
Another example would be Judi Hurst – she is a grandparent of a Plumb 5th Grader. She is an accomplished musician and has a passion for Art and Music. She knows personally the affect that Music an Art can have on a child’s life, so she took on coordinating the “Reflections”` program for the last two years. She did an amazing job and she will be missed next year when her grandkids move on to Middle School!
My personal background is in Accounting, so it was easy for me to start off on the PTA Board as Treasurer.
Our Board is small, and we can’t do everything. If you, as a parent, see a need around our school, you have the background and the passion and you are willing to take on coordinating a project that addresses that need, the PTA more than happy to help by:
Allocating money in the budget (if we have it)
Helping you coordinate your project with the school
Making suggestions on how to ask for donations, fundraising ideas or applying for grants to fund your project
Adding it to our monthly calendar
Sending out communication to the rest of the parents and students to promote your project and help you find volunteers
We do ask that you try to bring your idea to one of our Board Meetings so we can discuss it. We don’t have to do the same thing every year!
Having said that, the PTA is looking for some positive, energetic folks to join the PTA Board for the 2015-2016 school year. Most of our Executive Board is at their two consecutive year limit. Some of the positions that are open (but not limited to) are:
President – Plan meetings, work with Treasurer to create budget for the year, coordinate with VP’s on fundraisers and programs for the year
Vice President of Programs – Plan and coordinate Movie Nights, Speakers at General Meetings, Help with Reflections, etc.
Vice President of Ways and Means (Fundraising) – Help plan and coordinate fundraisers, including Cookie Dough, Spirit Nights, Merchandise sales or Fun Fest
Secretary – Take minutes at the Board and General Meetings, general PTA Correspondence (Get Well cards, etc.)
Fun Fest - Help coordinate venues, vendors, sponsors, tee shirts
Membership – Coordinate PTA Membership drives, keep Membership records, make sure state & national PTA dues are paid on monthly basis
All of these positions can be done by more than one person (“Co-Chair”) – in fact, this makes it easier and more fun! If you are interested in getting involved, bring a friend to help you! If we don’t fill the Executive positions – especially President, and Secretary, there won’t be a PTA next year (I have already committed to the Treasurer position).
Our Board Meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the Media Center (The March 10 meeting will actually be at 7PM). Please consider stopping into one of these meetings and checking us out! Or contact me at PlumbPTAPresident@gmail.com and let me know how you would like to help! Elections for the Executive Board will be held at the April General Meeting on the 21st of the month.
Please help us continue the great things the PTA has done at Plumb!
